Charlotte Bernays

(1952–)

  • Charlotte Bernays has been working predominantly in sculpture for 50 years. She holds a BA (Hons) in 3D Design in Bristol and has taught sculpture, printmaking, drawing, painting and ceramics at all levels. She worked for Christine Edzard of Sands Films across many years, making costumes and props for film and ballet. Charlotte has exhibited at a range of venues including Keats House, for the bi-centenary celebrations of Keats' birth; and the Barbican Library Gallery in London. Most recently, Charlotte has displayed her sculptures, installations and drawings in a solo show at The Sentinel Gallery. She has also illustrated books by David Cobb and Martin Newell.

    Her sculpture and paintings can be seen in various public buildings including Milsoms, Dedham, and in the collection of Ralph Lauren, Milan.

  • 1979 - Midland Group Gallery, Nottingham. Sculpture, group exhibition.

    1994 - Minories, Colchester. ‘Within and Without’ sculpture, mixed media. Group exhibition: ‘The Secret Garden’, Keats House, London.

    1995 - John Keats Bi-Centenary Festival Solo exhibition.

    2000 - Barbican Library: ‘The Art of Haiku’. ‘Traces’: sculptures, mixed media.

    2005 - Wivenhoe Gallery: ‘Violent Sweeps and Tiny Tremors’: a large mixed-media sculpture following on from the poetry and cycling tours: ‘Spoke-n-Word’, a collaboration with Martin Newell.

    2008 - 3-week construction and installation of ‘Violent Sweeps and Tiny Tremors’ (30’ x 8’) on top of a canal barge, and participation in Open Studios, Colchester.

    2015 - Solo exhibition at the Sentinel Gallery Wivenhoe: ‘Numberless Points’. Won visitor category University of Essex with ‘Whirrs and Whirls’ mixed media.

    2018 - Solo Exhibition: ‘Elemental’ at the Boat Shed, Wivenhoe.

    2026 - Solo exhibition at the Minories, Colchester “The Constant State of Becoming” with the support of the Henry Moore Foundation.

On the occasion of her first major exhibition of works (The Minories, 9 May – 28 June 2026) Cal Smith Gallery presents a selection of unique pieces by Charlotte Bernays.

Charlotte is an artist in perpetual motion. Moving fluidly between two and three dimensions, across media and materials, her practice mirrors its central subject: the endless cycle of transformation that governs the natural world.
