About the artwork
Elsa-Maria Andersson (1921–2011) was a Swedish textile artist rooted in Skåne County, a region with a tapestry tradition dating back to the 16th century.
Woven in the 1950s, this monumental tapestry is one of her earliest pieces. It is her interpretation of an original painting by her father-in-law, the modernist painter Edvard Andersson (also shown here), with whom she often collaborated.
Her process was highly experimental in the use of fibres, natural dyes, and weaving techniques, resulting in a richly textured surface. Due to the months of meticulous weaving required for each piece, Elsa-Maria Andersson’s works are very rare.
Blending innovation with tradition, this striking piece sits at a pivotal time just before the international rise of textile art as a feminist practice in the 60s.
