About the artist
Louis Neillot (1898–1973) was a French painter, known as the last of the Fauvists. The son of a gardener, he was fascinated by the joy and beauty emanating from nature. In his lifetime, he exhibited alongside Bonnard, Léger, Picasso, Modigliani, and Matisse; with solo shows in New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, Toronto, and Brussels.
This extremely special painting depicts the ‘Colette Quarry’ in the Allier region, central France. This place may have had a special place in his heart, as he named his own daughter Colette.
